‘HOYTS’ is one of the world’s leading movie exhibitor companies. It has branches spread across more than 50 cities in Australia and New Zealand. For the first time in history, tickets to a Bangladeshi cinema, ‘Rickshaw Girl’, will be sold on the HOYTS website.
The film, directed by Amitabh Reza, will be released in cinemas in Bangladeshi-dominated cities in Australia and New Zealand from June 8–this was made possible due to the relentless efforts of the Australian-based distribution company and the film’s associate producer, Bongoz Films. They also distribute Bangladeshi films in Malaysia, Sweden and Finland.
In the meantime, posters, relevant tidbits, and trailers of Rickshaw Girl have been available on the HOYTS website. Ticket buyers will be able to redeem Dine & Discover, and Parent vouchers for ‘Rickshaw Girl’.
Speaking on the occasion, Taneem Mannan, founder of Bongoz Film, said, HOYTS is quite renowned in the cinema world and is one of the largest movie exhibitor companies in Australia. This is the first time in history that a Bangladeshi movie will be hosted at HOYTS for ticket sales, which is undoubtedly a huge achievement for ‘Rickshaw Girl’ and Bangladeshi cinema. I would like to request everyone, especially the Bangladeshi residents of Australia, to watch the film at the cinemas.
Bongoz Films has regularly been arranging screenings of Bangladeshi cinemas in Australia since 2016 and has so far screened 32 Bengali films from India and Bangladesh, but the screenings were done privately.
The tickets to the Bangladeshi films were not available on the HOYTS website and had to be bought from external ticketing platforms. With ‘Rickshaw Girl’ being sold on the HOYTS website, Bengali cinema has been able to join the ranks of mainstream commercial cinema.
Earlier, during the month of May, ‘Rickshaw Girl’ was screened in 52 cities across 18 states of the USA. The states in which the cinema was screened are as follows: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Ohio, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arizona, Oregon, North Carolina, Illinois, Michigan, Washington, and California.
‘Rickshaw Girl’, Amitabh Reza’s second film, is still awaiting release in Bangladeshi theatres. Through his first film, ‘Aynabaji’, Amitabh Reza won the hearts of the viewers.
The plot of the film, based on the middle-grade novel by Indian-American writer Mitali Perkins, revolves around the life struggle of a teenager named ‘Naima’. Actress Novera Rahman played the role of ‘Naima’. The film also stars Champa, Momena Chowdhury, Naresh Bhuiyan, Allen Shubro, and others. The screenplay was co-written by Naseef Faruque Amin and Sharbari Zohra Ahmed.
‘Rickshaw Girl’ has received critical acclaim and won awards in various film festivals, including the Prescott Film Festival in the United States and the SCHLINGEL International Film Festival in Germany. The film is a joint production of Bangladesh and the United States; the producers are Ziauddin Adil, Faridur Reza Sagor, and Eric J. Adams.Press Release
