Awami League veteran and renegade leader Nurul Islam has won the by-election for the post of chairman of Jagannathpur Upazila Parishad in Sunamganj.
On Thursday, May 25, votes were taken in electronic voting machines-EVMs in a peaceful environment.
Returning Officer Mohammad Murad Uddin Howladar announced the results at Jagannathpur Upazila Parishad Conference Room at 8:30 PM. Later he handed over the written result to the winning candidate.
According to the votes, Awami League candidate Nurul Islam was elected by getting 22 thousand 212 votes. His nearest rival independent candidate Syed Talha Alam got 11 thousand 203 votes. In other words, the victory of ‘Boat’ has come with double votes.
District Election Officer and Returning Officer Mohammad Murad Uddin Howladar said that the election was free, fair and peaceful. No untoward incident was reported anywhere.
It is to be noted that Jagannathpur Upazila Parishad elections were held on November 2 last year. Awami League candidate Akmal Hossain was elected as chairman; But the post fell vacant as he died on December 26. Jagannathpur Correspondent
