Professor Golam Rasul, the former Principal of Sylhet Government College (Murarichand College), transcended the boundaries of mere academia. He was not merely a teacher or an academic administrator; rather, he embodied a rare blend of intellect, compassion, and foresight that left an indelible mark on the academic landscape of Sylhet. A graduate in Botany, his journey from being a gifted student to a mindful educator and adept administrator exemplifies the profound impact of interdisciplinary knowledge in shaping institutions.
The question arises: How can expertise in Botany translate into effective teaching or administration? Yet, Professor Golam Rasul’s example illustrates that the principles imbibed during academic pursuits are universal and applicable across diverse domains. One’s stewardship of educational institutions, banks, and industrial establishments underscores the intrinsic value of subject-specific knowledge in leadership roles.
What distinguished Professor Golam Rasul was not merely his academic prowess but his unwavering commitment to egalitarianism. Regardless of caste, creed, or political affiliation, he treated everyone with equanimity, transcending divisive ideologies. His leadership was guided by a moral compass untainted by political or religious biases. As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of his passing, we fondly recall Professor Golam Rasul’s myriad contributions to the society. From his stellar academic achievements, including securing second position in his MSc in Botany from Dhaka University to his tenure as Principal, his legacy remains etched in the annals of Sylhet’s academic heritage.
Professor Golam Rasul Sir’s illustrious career spans across multiple esteemed institutions, leaving an indelible mark on each. As Principal, he steered the helm of leadership at the Islamic Intermediate College in Chittagong, Rajendra College in Faridpur, and the revered Sylhet Government College (Murarichand College). His dedication extended beyond Principalship, serving as Vice-Principal at Bagura Government College and Vice-Principal at Sylhet Government College from 1966 to 1969. During his tenure, he spearheaded transformative initiatives, including the supervision of Sylhet Government College’s first Muslim hostel in 1962. His commitment to enhancing academic quality and facilities manifested in the establishment of new departments, Honours programmes, and Master’s offerings.
Beyond institutional roles, Professor Golam Rasul Sir’s influence reverberated in academia. He actively contributed to the Academic Councils and Syndicates of prestigious universities such as the University of Dhaka and the University of Chittagong. His involvement extended to pivotal committees, including the Admissions and Affiliation Committees at the University of Chittagong.
Starting as a brilliant student at Murarchand College, he transitioned seamlessly into a dedicated educator, professor, and astute academic administrator, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and innovation.
Post-retirement, Professor Golam Rasul continued to champion education, spearheading the establishment of new institutions such as Moinuddin Adarsha Mahila College and British Bangladesh International School. His visionary leadership laid the groundwork for these institutions, shaping the trajectory of education in Sylhet. His pivotal role in the inception of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology exemplifies his foresight and acumen. As its first Treasurer, he played a pivotal role in assembling a team of distinguished scholars, nurturing the university into a bastion of academic excellence.
Professor Golam Rasul’s legacy extends beyond academia; he was a beacon of moral integrity and social consciousness. His religious devotion was complemented by a profound sense of communal harmony, epitomising the essence of enlightened citizenship.
In recounting his life, we are reminded of his humility, simplicity, and resilience. Despite personal adversities, including the loss of his home during the Liberation War, he persevered with stoic resolve, embodying the virtues of fortitude and perseverance.
My encounter with Professor Golam Rasul left an indelible impression, underscoring his humility and sincerity. His refusal to endorse our initiative, citing unfamiliarity, served as a poignant lesson in candour and integrity. Yet, his warmth and hospitality mirrored the essence of genuine camaraderie.
Professor Golam Rasul Sir was a prolific writer, evident in his masterfully crafted autobiography, “My Memoirs”. His literary prowess extended beyond his memoir, with hundreds of articles and lectures gracing the pages of newspapers, journals, and the airwaves of radio stations. The reservoir of knowledge and wisdom contained within his works holds immense potential to enrich the minds of the new generation. Thus, their publication would undoubtedly be a boon for those seeking enlightenment and inspiration.
In Professor Golam Rasul, we find a paragon of virtue and erudition- a luminary whose brilliance illuminated the path for generations to come. As we navigate the complexities of the present, let us draw inspiration from his life, endeavouring to emulate his ethos of excellence, inclusivity, and altruism.
Professor Golam Rasul Sir left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing on May 11, 2004, during medical treatment, marked the end of a remarkable life lived to the age of 81. Today, I honour his legacy with my deepest respects.
May the memory of Professor Golam Rasul continue to inspire and guide us, illuminating the path towards a more enlightened and harmonious society.
