Staff Reporter: Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Mojibor Rahman said that the lack of awareness about disabled people has reduced a lot. But awareness should be increased. The government is also taking new initiatives.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the discussion meeting and distribution of Smart White Cans (Sadachari) organized by Sylhet District Administration, District Social Service Office and Disability Services and Aid Center on the occasion of World Sadachari Safety Day.
On Saturday morning, this program was organized in the conference room of the district administration on the theme of ‘Use vision technology-based sadchari’.
Nivas Ranjan Das, Deputy Director of District Social Service Office presided over it. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Anwar Sadat, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Gautam Deb, Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Mohammad Salim, Deputy Director of Divisional Social Services Office Abdul Rafiq, President of Sylhet District Press Club Al Azad, President of Sylhet Online Press Club Muhit Chowdhury and Writer-journalist Aftab Chowdhury were the special guests. District Disability Officer Siddharth Shankar Roy delivered the welcome address. Ataur Rahman Khan, President of Pratibandhi Foundation, Bayejid Khan, Executive Director of Green Disabled Foundation and Salamat Raja Chowdhury, General Secretary of Surma Andhakalyan Samiti also spoke. Md Lutfar Rahman, assistant manager of the training and rehabilitation center for socially handicapped girls coducted the program. Representatives of various organizations were also present.
During the discussion, Chief Guest Deputy Commissioner Md Mojibor Rahman said, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman ensured the dignity and rights of disabled people.
He said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina always inquires about disabled people. Various opportunities have been created for them. Allowances are provided so that they are as good as everyone else. They are also being given job benefits by the government.
The Deputy Commissioner said that new public and private buildings and roads are being provided with easy access and safe movement facilities for disabled people.
The Deputy Commissioner also confirmed that visually impaired people can get free treatment at the Jalalabad Andhakalyan Samiti Hospital.
