Three thousand fishermen and fish farming families affected by floods in Sylhet, Sunamganj and Moulvibazar districts have received food and financial assistance from United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization-FAO.
The assistance was provided on Thursday from FAO’s Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Operations.
Last June, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations adopted a plan to rehabilitate those affected by the severe floods in Sylhet, Sunamganj and Moulvibazar districts. After a series of meetings with the upazila administration and fisheries department, FAO selected Balaganj and Goainghat in Sylhet, Chatak, Jagannathpur and Shantiganj in Sunamganj and Juri upazila in Moulvibazar for assistance.
Under the close supervision and support of the concerned Upazila Nirbahi Officer, FAO officials were directly involved in the selection of poor, flood-prone fisher folk and fisher folk families by the officials of the Upazila level Fisheries Department.
Note that 50 percent of the total beneficiaries are women headed families.
Through Bikash mobile banking, every affected family has been given 4 thousand 500 rupees through their own Bikash account. Source Press Release
